Local 202 Awards 40 College Scholarships

Ceremony Pays Tribute to Local 202’s 100 Year Anniversary and History Fighting for Workers

THROGS NECK, NY – The Teamsters Local 202 Scholarship Fund awarded 40 college scholarships tonight to the children of Local 202 members at the union’s Dinner Dance at Marina Del Rey.

“Local 202 is here to support these Teamster kids, whether their ultimate goal is to follow their parents footsteps into our union or forge another path,” said Teamsters Local 202 President Daniel Kane, Jr. “Beginning in 1916 and continuing today, Teamsters Local 202 has fought to make opportunity and a middle-class life real for New York’s working families. The scholarship fund is part of that legacy.”

Over 300 union members and supporters attended the celebration, which was joined by U.S. Congressman Jose Serrano, Assembly Members Marcos Crespo and Victor Pichardo, Council Members Rafael Salamanca, Vanessa Gibson, and Antonio Reynoso, and New York State Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon.

Since its inception, Teamsters Local 202 has represented workers in New York’s produce and food service industry, first at the markets and warehouses along Manhattan’s West Side and since 1967 at the Hunts Point Terminal Market. The Hunts Point market has grown to become the largest produce market in the United States, serving most of the restaurants and grocers in the New York area. Local 202 has grown alongside the market, representing about 1,000 workers at the market and over 4,000 workers in total.

Union members with over 40 years of service were also honored at the Dinner Dance.

Local 202 is part of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of America’s largest and strongest unions.
