Support Nurses on Strike

Dear Joint Council 16 local unions,

We have been notified by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) that nurses at two major New York City hospitals are on strike starting, Monday, January 9, 2023.

Nurses have been frontline essential workers during the pandemic, caring for our loved ones without enough support. The union is fighting for a fair raise and safe staffing, among other issues.

As one of New York’s most powerful unions, Teamsters have a duty to support our brothers and sisters in the labor movement fighting for justice at work. Greater New York’s 25 Teamster locals, representing 120,000 members, stand in solidarity with NYSNA nurses.

I am requesting that all local unions give whatever help and support they can to bring this strike to a successful conclusion.

The strike is at Montefiore Bronx and Mount Sinai Hospital. Picket lines are running 7am to 7pm, and NYSNA and the Central Labor Council are asking supporters to join nurses on the picket line between 10am and 2pm. Picket lines are planned at the following addresses:

  • Mount Sinai Hospital – 1 Gustave L. Levy Pl., Madison Ave & 99th St, New York, NY 10029
  • Montefiore Moses – 111 E 210th St, The Bronx, NY 10467
  • Montefiore Weiler – 1825 Eastchester Rd, The Bronx, NY 10461
  • Montefiore Hutch – 1250 Waters Pl., Bronx, NY 10461

If you have any questions, please contact NYSNA representatives David Cohen (david.cohen@nysna.org, 347-813-1455) or Joanna Solmonsohn (joanna.solmonsohn@nysna.org). We will keep you apprised of progress in this strike.

Fraternally,

Thomas Gesualdi, President
International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Joint Council 16
