Teamsters Endorse Yuh-Line Niou for Assembly
NEW YORK, NY – Two of New York City’s largest organizations of labor unions – Teamsters Joint Council 16, which represents over 120,000 workers in New York City and Puerto Rico and The Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York representing over 100,000 working men and women in our region, today strongly endorsed Yuh-Line Niou for State Assembly. Niou is running, as the Working Families candidate to fill the vacant seat in the 65th Assembly District, made vacant by the corruption conviction of former Speaker Sheldon Silver.
Niou was also endorsed by several of the member unions of the Building Trades Council, including the NYC District Council of Carpenters District Council, The Mason Tenders District Council, and the Steamfitters. These endorsements add to a growing list of support from organized labor across the City and State and highlight the strength of the campaign that Niou is building.
“We are proud to support Yuh-Line Niou for New York State Assembly,” said Gary LaBarbera, president of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York. “Yuh-Line is committed to fighting for good middle class jobs and wages families can live on. We know she will strongly advocate for our members in Albany and for all the working families of the 65th Assembly District.”
“Our members are proud to stand with Yuh-Line Niou because of her long history of standing up for working families and immigrants,” said George Miranda, President of Teamsters Joint Council 16. “We know that Yuh-Line will be the strong progressive voice downtown needs to protect affordable housing and NYCHA residents, help make downtown more resilient to future storms, and reduce income inequality across our city.”
“The NYC & Vicinity District Council of Carpenters is proud to offer our full support to Yuh- Line Niou,” said Stephen McInnis, President, NYC & Vicinity District Council of Carpenters. “Yuh-Line will be a strong voice for our membership in Albany and will fight hard to ensure New Yorkers are paid family sustaining wages and benefits. We look forward to partnering with her in her campaign and in her future role as a member of the NYS Assembly.”
“This is going to be a close election, and I couldn’t be more honored to have the Building Trades and Teamsters in our corner helping us reach the finish line,” said Niou. “And when we win on April 19th, I will proudly say that this victory will be union-built and union-strong!”
Niou, a lifelong Democrat, is running in the Special Election on the Working Families Party line. She has been endorsed by 32BJ SEIU, the United Federation of Teachers, Hotel Trades Council, UDO, Make the Road Action as well as Comptroller Scott Stringer, former Comptroller John Liu, State Senator Brad Hoylman.
