Teamsters Joint Council 16 Statement on Puerto Rican Financial Crisis
NEW YORK, NY – George Miranda, President of Teamsters Joint Council 16, had the following statement on the Puerto Rican financial crisis:
“The New York Teamsters stand with the people of Puerto Rico in their call for federal intervention in the financial crisis. Puerto Ricans cannot be treated as second-class citizens — they are Americans and deserve the same protections that would be afforded a resident of the continental US.
“This situation was caused by bad federal policy. The federal government can and should step in.
“I want to thank Speaker Mark-Viverito and Mayor de Blasio for their leadership on this issue. New York and Puerto Rico have a special relationship. We will not rest until our brothers and sisters get the help and respect they deserve.”
